Forging is a manufacturing process, which deforms metal components into predetermined shapes by applying compressive forces on it. Compared to casting and machining forging improves the mechanical properties of the material by refining its grain structure and making it tougher and stronger. This process can be classified in "hot", "warm" and "cold" according to the temperature at which it is performed.

Cold forging is performed at room temperature, and the most common metals in cold forging applications are usually steel and aluminum. Manufacturers may prefer cold over hot forging process for many reasons: cold forged parts require very little or no finishing work, therefore it saves cost. The second significant advantage is the material savings achieved through precise dimensions. The third benefits is better overall surface finish. In general, the economic advantages combined with high production rates and long die life make cold forging a desirable option.

The disadvantage of cold forging, however, is its limitation to achieve complex shape. Another disadvantage is its lower ductility and residual stress occurred during deformation.

Hot forging, on the contrary, is able to achieve optimum yield strength, low hardness and high ductility by deforming at high temperature. The disadvantage of hot forging is its possible shrinkage, warpage, and contamination.

In the end, the decision is based on the required functions of the component, the application and its production quantity. As an expert in forging technology, we are most glad to give you recommendation for your products.
